Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella Oral Contraceptive Birth Control Lawsuits
A New Form of Birth Control Brings New, Dangerous Side Effects
YAZ marketing urges women to “take action and go beyond birth control.” But doing so brings unique and potentially deadly health risks. Women throughout the country have reported serious and life-threatening YAZ side effects, including blood clots, strokes, and gallbladder disease. Some women have died from these side effects. Women throughout the country injured by YAZ have filed lawsuits to recover for their injuries.
YAZ and Yasmin are oral contraceptives (birth control pills) manufactured by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, Inc. The generic equivalent of Yasmin, Ocella, is manufactured by Barr Laboratories, Inc., recently acquired by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, Ltd. These drugs are also marketed and prescribed for acne treatment and for use in treating premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).

The Unique Dangers of YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella
All oral contraceptives have health risks because they alter hormone levels. However, YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella are uniquely dangerous. Like other birth control pills, they contain an estrogen. The estrogen in YAZ/Yasmin/Ocella is called ethinyl estradiol. However, unlike other birth control pills, YAZ/Yasmin/Ocella contain a synthetic progestin called drospirenone. Drospirenone is what makes YAZ/Yasmin/Ocella particularly dangerous.

YAZ/Yasmin/Ocella Side Effects
YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella injuries and side effects include:
The risk of blood clots -- or thrombosis -- is twice as great with YAZ/Yasmin/Ocella than with older birth control pills. And while YAZ/Yasmin/Ocella come with a risk of gallbladder disease and hyperkalemia (elevated potassium levels), these side effects are virtually nonexistent with most older forms of birth control pills.

Lawsuits are being filed for the failure to warn about these increased health risks. Indeed, the marketing for YAZ and Yasmin was so overreaching that Bayer was required to run a $20 million advertising campaign to correct previous YAZ advertisements that overstated the benefits, and understated the health risks.
