YAZ/Yasmin Side EffectsAll forms of oral birth control bring certain risks because they alter hormone levels. But the synthetic progestin
drospirenone contained in YAZ, Yasmin, Zarah and Ocella increases those risks, and adds new ones.
The possible side effects of YAZ/Yasmin include:
- heart attack; sudden cardiac death; myocardial infarction
- abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmia)
- elevated potassium levels
These side effects are far less common in older oral birth control pills. Indeed, according to a recent study in the British Medical Journal, YAZ, Yasmin, Zarah and Ocella are
twice as likely to cause blood clots (or thrombosis) as older birth control pills that do not contain the progestin
drospirenone (drsp). Instead of
drospirenone, older oral contraceptives contain norgrestrel, levonorgestrel or norethindrone.
The risk of YAZ side effects and Yasmin side effects is even greater when certain health and risk factors are present. Some of the increased risk factors for side effects are: women over age 35, women with diabetes, women who smoke more than 15 cigarettes a day, and women with high levels of blood cholesterol or fat.
