Arrhythmia, or Abnormal Heartbeats - a Side Effect of Propoxyphene Painkillers

An arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat, occurs when the electrical impulses that control the beating of the heart are disrupted. This potentially fatal condition is a side effect of painkillers containing Propoxyphene.

Arrhythmia: a Disruption of the Heart’s Electrical System

An arrhythmia is a change in the normal sequence of the electrical impulses that control the beating of the heart. The human heart consists of four chambers and four valves. The heart pumps blood through the body with a sequence of contractions of the four chambers.

Electrical impulses that flow through the heart cause the contractions. Arrhythmia is when these electrical impulses are disrupted, causing the heart to beat in an irregular manner. Some arrhythmias last for only a brief moment, but others last longer, causing the heart to pump less effectively and can be potentially fatal.

Darvon, Darvocet, and Other Propoxyphene Painkillers Disrupt the Heart’s Electrical Activity, Causing Arrhythmia

Painkillers than contain Propoxyphene disrupt the heart’s electrical impulses, causing potentially fatal arrhythmia. Recent studies have shown that even when taken at recommended doses, Propoxyphene causes significant changes to the electrical activity of the heart, at times causing death. Propoxyphene is most commonly known by the brand names Darvon and Darvocet, but is also sold under various brands names such as Dolene, Propacet 100, Wygesic, SK-65, SK-65 APAP, Trycet, Genagesic, E-Lor, and Balacet.

Arrhythmia Wrongful Death Claims for Darvon, Darvocet, or Propoxyphene Side Effects

If a family member has died from a heart attack while using a Propoxyphene painkiller, you or your family member’s estate may have a legal claim against the drug manufacturer. However, such claims must be brought within a certain time period, and vary depending on where your family member lived and the specific facts of his or her case.
