Gallbladder Disease is a YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella Side Effect
Use of
YAZ birth control,
Yasmin birth control, and
Ocella birth control has been linked to gallbladder disease. Otherwise healthy young women who have used
YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella have been forced to have surgery to remove their gallbladder after using this form of birth control.
What is the Gallbladder?
The gallbladder is a small organ on the underside of the liver, on the right side of the abdomen. The gallbladder's function is to store bile, which is produced in the liver. Bile is secreted into the intestines, as needed, which helps the body digest fats.
Bile is composed of cholesterol, bile salts, and bilirubin. YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella alter the body's normal balance between salt and water. This may explain why YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella cause gallbladder disease. Also, YAZ can increase cholesterol levels in bile while simultaneously decreasing gallbladder movement, leading to gallstones.
What are the Symptoms of Gallbladder Disease?
Many women with gallstones, one form of gallbladder disease, experience no symptoms at all. For patients who do have symptoms, these may include abdominal pain just under the rib cage on the right side, nausea and vomiting.
A more serious type of gallbladder disease is cholecystitis. Cholecystitis is an infection or inflammation of the gallbladder. Women suffering from cholecystitis experience the same symptoms as for gallstones, only more extreme, as well as fever, chills, and elevated white blood cell count.
Significant numbers of women who used YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella must have their gallbladder removed, a procedure called a cholecystectomy. They can then suffer from impaired digestion, bloating, gas, heartburn, constipation or diarrhea. This surgery can also leave women with abdominal scars. Finally, many women who have had their gallbladder removed must radically alter their diet. This risk of gallbladder disease is virtually nonexistent for older birth control pills which, unlike YAZ/Yasmin/Ocella, do not contain the synthetic progestin drospirenone (drsp).
