Hyperkalemia is a YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella Side Effect
What is Hyperkalemia?
Hyperkalemia is a condition caused by higher than normal levels of Potassium in the bloodstream. Hyperkalemia is a side effect of YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella birth control pills.
Potassium is important for the regulation of muscle tissue, and plays a role in digestion, metabolism, and homeostasis (the process by which the human body maintains a balance of its internal functions, including electrical and chemical processes).
Although the human body needs some potassium to function, elevated levels of potassium, called hyperkalemia, are dangerous. Extreme hyperkalemia is a medical emergency because it poses a risk of arrhythmia (potentially fatal abnormal heart rhythms) and cardiac arrest. The deadly nature of hyperkalemia is reflected by the fact that it plays a role in execution by lethal injection: hyperkalemia is intentionally brought about as the third and final part of execution by lethal injection, in which potassium chloride is administered to cause death.
YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella Cause Hyperkalemia
YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella birth control contain Drospirenone (or "drsp"). Drospirenone is a synthetic progestin, and YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella are the first type of birth control that contain it. Drospirenone can increase blood potassium levels, which results in hyperkalemia. Women with pre-existing kidney, liver and adrenal disease are particularly susceptible to developing hyperkalemia after taking YAZ, Yasmin and Ocella.
